ジョン・ザイマン

ジョン・マイケル・ザイマン（John Michael Ziman、1925年5月16日 - 2005年1月2日）^[1]は、イギリス生まれニュージーランドの物理学者、人文主義者。物性物理学の分野で研究を行った^[2][3][4]。科学のスポークスマンでもあり、教師、作家でもあった。

1925年にイングランド、ケンブリッジに生まれた。両親はSolomon Netheim ZimanとNellie Frances（旧姓Gaster）であった。赤ちゃんの時に家族でニュージーランドへ移住した。Hamilton High Schoolとヴィクトリア大学ウェリントンで教育を受けた。オックスフォード大学のベリオール・カレッジでPhDを取得し、ケンブリッジ大学で液体金属中の電子の理論に関する初期研究を行った^[5]。

1964年、ブリストル大学の理論物理学の教授に任命され、そこでElements Of Advanced Quantum Theory(1969)（『現代量子論の基礎』）を書き、基礎的な物性物理学の観点を伴う場の量子論の基礎を説明した。この間に、彼の興味は科学哲学に移った。彼は多くのエッセイや本の中で、科学の社会的側面^[6][7][8][9]と科学者の社会的責任^{[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]}について論じた。

2度結婚している（1951年にRosemary Dixonと、2度目はJoan Solomonと）^[18]。
