John Henry Newman, C.O., (21 Februari 1801 – 11 Agustus 1890)^[6][7] adalah seorang teolog, penyair, dan pastor Anglikan, serta seorang kardinal Katolik di kemudian hari, yang dipandang sebagai seorang tokoh penting dan kontroversial dalam sejarah religius Inggris pada abad ke-19. Ia dikenal secara nasional pada pertengahan tahun 1830-an.^[8]

Pada awalnya Newman adalah seorang akademisi evangelikal Universitas Oxford dan pastor dalam Gereja Inggris, dan kemudian tertarik pada tradisi gereja tinggi dalam Anglikanisme. Ia lalu dikenal sebagai salah seorang pemimpin Gerakan Oxford dan ahli polemik yang cakap di dalamnya. Gerakan tersebut merupakan suatu kelompok umat Anglikan yang berpengaruh dan kontroversial, yang ingin mengembalikan banyak keyakinan dan ritual liturgis Katolik dari masa sebelum terjadinya Reformasi Inggris ke dalam Gereja Inggris. Gerakan Oxford berhasil meraih sejumlah keberhasilan. Namun, pada tahun 1845, Newman, bersama dengan sejumlah pengikutnya, meninggalkan Gereja Inggris dan melepaskan jabatannya sebagai pengajar di Universitas Oxford serta diterima di dalam Gereja Katolik. Tidak lama kemudian ia ditahbiskan sebagai imam Katolik dan tetap menjadi seorang pemimpin religius yang berpengaruh, yang berbasis di Birmingham. Pada tahun 1879, ia diangkat menjadi kardinal oleh Paus Leo XIII sebagai pengakuan atas jasanya kepada Gereja Katolik di Inggris. Ia berperan penting dalam pendirian Universitas Katolik Irlandia,^[9] yang kelak berkembang menjadi University College Dublin, universitas terbesar di Irlandia pada saat ini.

Beatifikasi Newman secara resmi dimaklumkan oleh Paus Benediktus XVI pada tanggal 19 September 2010 dalam kunjungannya ke Britania Raya.^[1] Kanonisasi Newman bergantung pada dokumentasi mukjizat-mukjizat tambahan yang dikaitkan dengan perantaraannya.

Newman juga dipandang sebagai seorang tokoh literer ternama. Karya-karya tulisnya yang utama misalnya Tracts for the Times (1833–1841), autobiografinya dengan judul Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1865–1866), Grammar of Assent (1870), dan puisi berjudul The Dream of Gerontius (1865),^[7] yang dijadikan komposisi musikal pada tahun 1900 oleh Edward Elgar. Ia menulis himne-himne populer berjudul "Lead, Kindly Light" dan "Praise to the Holiest in the Height" (diambil dari Gerontius).
