Balanej (Persian: بالانج)[a] is a village in, and the capital of, Baranduzchay-ye Jonubi Rural District of the Central District of Urmia County, West Azerbaijan province, Iran.[4]

History

The village was largely inhabited by Assyrians until the Assyrian genocide.[citation needed]

Demographics

Population

At the time of the 2006 National Census, the village's population was 2,189 in 506 households.[5] The following census in 2011 counted 2,407 people in 629 households.[6] The 2016 census measured the population of the village as 3,023 people in 797 households. It was the most populous village in its rural district.[2]
